Chevrolet is one badge over several completely different anti-theft systems, and the one under your steering column decides the job. A 2008 Colorado in Garland carries no chip in its key at all, so a correctly cut B110 blade starts it. A 2016 Malibu in Plano needs its BCM PIN read over OBD before a fob will learn. A 2024 Tahoe in Frisco will not accept a key until a CAN-FD adapter is on the bus and two separate 24-digit security codes have been entered. Chevrolet Key Technology Explained
Chevrolet has run through a stack of anti-theft systems since 1993, and they do not line up neatly by year. VATS and PASS-Key II (1993-2002 Camaro, 1997-2004 C5 Corvette) hid a resistor pellet in the blade, with no chip and no immobilizer to program. PassLock II (2000-2005 Impala, 2004-2012 Colorado, 2005-2006 Equinox) authenticates the ignition lock cylinder instead of the key. The first transponder era splits two ways: PK3 with a Megamos ID13 chip on the 2002-2009 TrailBlazer and 2005-2008 Uplander, and PK3+ Circle Plus with Philips Crypto ID46 on the Z-keyway B111-PT blade across roughly 2004-2013. GM then standardized on Hitag2 ID46 with the HU100 8-cut blade, in PCF7937E flips, PCF7952 PEPS units and NCF2951E smart fobs. Global B arrives model by model rather than brand-wide — 2021 on the T1XX Tahoe and Suburban, 2022 on the T1XX Silverado, 2023 on the Colorado, with 2021-on Equinox and Traverse builds moving to CAN-FD mid-generation too — and it brings NXP Hitag Pro ID49 with AES-128 on a CAN-FD bus. Treat that as the list we have documented rather than a closed one, and read the build from the VIN.
Chevrolet Models We Service Most Often in DFW
Chevrolet Malibu
The 2013-2015 8th gen splits on one body into a turn-key OHT01060512 flip and a push-to-start OHT05918179 PEPS smart flip. Both are ID46 Hitag2 on an HU100 blade and both read the BCM PIN, 15-25 and 15-30 minutes respectively. The 2016-2023 9th gen is push-to-start NCF2951E at 433.92 MHz on HYQ4EA or HYQ4ES, so 315 MHz Buick Encore or Envision stock is the wrong fob for it. The 2004-2012 car is Circle Plus on a Z-keyway B111-PT blade, a different Lishi entirely.
Chevrolet Silverado
Three eras under one nameplate. The 2007-2013 GMT900 is a Z-keyway B111-PT blade with a separate OUC60270 or OUC60221 remote, two items to quote instead of one. The 2014-2019 K2XX is the M3N-32337100 flip on HU100, Global A, no PIN, 12-35 minutes. The T1XX runs 2019-2026 with a hard split: 2019-2021 is HYQ1EA and ID46, 2022+ is HYQ1ES or YG0G21TB2 and ID49 on CAN-FD. WT and Custom trims stayed turn-key the whole way through.
Chevrolet Equinox
One name, four systems. 2005-2006 1st gen is PassLock II with no chip in the key. 2007-2009 is PK3+ Circle Plus ID46 on a B111-PT Z-keyway blade. 2010-2017 2nd gen is the turn-key OHT01060512 flip on HU100, no PIN, 12-35 minutes. The 2018-2024 3rd gen push-to-start cars run 315 MHz, and the HYQ4AA is the common fob there, so grabbing a 433 MHz HYQ4EA is the usual mis-order; builds from 2021 move to CAN-FD, splitting that generation into a no-PIN job and a security-code job.
Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban
Push-to-start did not arrive until the 2015 K2XX; every GMT900 through 2014 is a turn-key B111-PT blade with a separate remote. 2015-2020 K2XX is Global A: no PIN, roughly a 12-minute door-cycle timer, 12-35 minutes. The 2021-2026 T1XX is Global B: CAN-FD adapter mandatory, 24-digit ECM and BCM codes, chip is ID49 Hitag Pro on YG0G21TB2, 25-45 minutes.
Chevrolet Cruze
Gen 1 (2011-2015) is the OHT01060512 flip, ID46 PCF7937E at 315 MHz, and some 2011-2012 cars carry a plain transponder blade instead of the flip. The 2016-2019 D2LC flip comes in two frequencies, LXP-T003 at 315 MHz (RPO XL7) and LXP-T004 at 433 MHz (RPO XL8), so we read the SPID RPO label under the trunk floor trim before ordering. Smart-key D2LC is HYQ4AA at 315 MHz, not the 433 MHz HYQ4EA that Malibu and Camaro use.
Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette
5th-gen Camaro (2010-2015) is a turn-key ID46 flip, 15-25 minutes. 6th gen (2016-2023) is push-to-start NCF2951E on HYQ4EA or HYQ4ES at 433.92 MHz. Corvette is four separate jobs: the C5 has no transponder at all, only a VATS resistor pellet in a B89 blade; the C6 is PEPS with no ignition cylinder (M3N65981403 for 2005-2007, M3N5WY7777A for 2008-2013); the C7 is PCF7952E on NBGGD9C04; the C8 is NXP AES-128 ID49 on YG0G20TB1, an OBD smart-key learn where we verify current tool coverage for the AES chip before rolling.
Chevrolet Colorado
2015-2022 is Global A ID46 on the M3N-32337100 flip at 315 MHz, the tool reads the PIN, 15-25 minutes. The 2023-2025 3rd gen is Global B: ID49 AES-128 on YG0G21TB2 at 434 MHz, CAN-FD adapter mandatory, rolling security code calculated off-vehicle, 30-60 minutes. The 2004-2012 GMT355 in US trim has no transponder in the key at all, so a correctly cut B110 blade starts it with nothing programmed (the Canadian-market truck used PK3+ instead).
Chevrolet TrailBlazer
Two unrelated vehicles share the name. The 2002-2009 GMT360 SUV is GM PK3 with a Megamos ID13 chip, not the ID46 that most of the Z-keyway fleet carries — it shares PK3 ID13 with the 2005-2008 Uplander — on a B99-PT blade with the MYT3X6898B remote. The 2021+ crossover is ID46 at 433 MHz on HU100 and splits by trim: the LXP-T004 flip on turn-key cars, HYQ4ES smart-prox on push-to-start cars.
Common Chevrolet Key Problems We Solve
Wrong fob ordered because the trim was guessed
A 2014 Impala and a 2014 Malibu each exist in two versions: a turn-key OHT01060512 flip and a push-to-start OHT05918179 PEPS flip, same year, same body. The two are not interchangeable, and the trim tables split them at LTZ or Premier and at the Keyless Access package. We confirm whether there is a START button at the vehicle before anything gets ordered or cut.
A 2022 Silverado quoted as if it were a 2021
On Silverado and Sierra the Global B changeover lands mid-generation. A 2019-2021 T1XX is HYQ1EA, ID46 and no PIN. A 2022+ T1XX is HYQ1ES or YG0G21TB2, ID49, and needs CAN-FD plus 24-digit ECM and BCM security codes; on a 2022+ WT or Custom plain blade key we plan for that same flow and confirm current tool coverage from the VIN before quoting. Tahoe and Suburban split differently: there the line falls on the generation boundary, K2XX through 2020 and Global B on the 2021-2026 T1XX. We verify the build year from the VIN, not the badge.
Weak 12V battery kills the learn halfway through
The door-cycle timer and the GM 30-minute relearn both hold modules awake for a long stretch, and a tired battery drops voltage far enough to fail the learn. On the cars that do read a BCM PIN, the PIN read is the first thing to fail. We put a maintainer on the battery before starting rather than aborting partway through the learn.
SECURITY light on and the engine starts then stalls
On PassLock vehicles this is a cylinder, sensor or BCM fault, not a key fault, because the key holds no chip to begin with. It clears with a PassLock relearn. Selling a new key here fixes nothing, so we diagnose it first.

VIN and build-year check before we roll
We identify Global A versus Global B, turn-key versus push-to-start, and the exact FCC and frequency. On Chevrolet that single step decides whether the van needs a CAN-FD adapter and an outside security-code calculation, or nothing beyond the Autel.

Decode the lock instead of guessing cuts
Lishi HU100 v.3 on the 8-cut Chevys, the warded Lishi B111 on the older Z-keyway cars, the non-warded GM37 on the Z-keyway trucks and SUVs. On the GMT900 trucks and full-size SUVs the driver door yields only part of the 10 ignition cuts, so we progress the missing positions; from the K2XX on, door and ignition share the same 8-cut set.

Cut the blade
HU100 or B119 for current models, B111-PT for Circle Plus era cars, or the emergency insert that lives inside a smart fob. Cut to the decode, then verified in the ignition before any programming starts.

Program to the immobilizer over OBD
The Global A cars are PIN jobs: on Malibu, Cruze, Impala, Camaro and the 2015-2022 Colorado the Autel IM508 or IM608 reads the BCM PIN, erases the lost keys and learns the new one. The truck and full-size SUV lines are not. The 2007-2013 and 2014-2019 Silverado, the 2007-2014 and 2015-2020 Tahoe and Suburban and the 2010-2017 Equinox need no PIN at all, and the tool runs the door-cycle timer or the GM 3x10-minute relearn instead. Global B is a third path: CAN-FD adapter, a 24-digit ECM code and a 24-digit BCM code from an outside calculation service, then the 12-minute door cycle. Of the Chevrolet generations our reference set documents OBD access for, none record a dealer-locked gateway module, so the port itself stays open. The security code is the gate.
