Hyundai is two different jobs wearing the same badge, and the split is not by year. A large share of US-market Hyundais never left the factory with an immobilizer: the 2011-2016 Elantra MD, 2017-2020 Elantra AD, 2016-2021 Tucson TL SE, 2013-2018 Santa Fe DM, 2018-2023 Kona OS SE, 2015-2017 Sonata LF SE and 2018-2023 Accent HC turn-key trims all carry a non-transponder blade in the US, while the Canadian and export versions of the same cars are immobilized. The Limited parked next to it on the same lot needs a full OBD smart-key learn. The keyways do not line up by year either — the lineup spans KK12, LXP90/KK10, the HY18/HY20 two-track laser, the HY22 high-security insert, HY15/HYN14R and the older HY12/X232, HY14/X236 and HY17/HYN15 blades, split by platform. We identify market, trim, keyway and chip from the VIN before the van leaves.
Hyundai Key Technology Explained
Hyundai does not run one key platform, it runs several in parallel, and working out which one you have decides the whole job. Many US turn-key trims — right through the base SE flip on the current CN7 Elantra — have no immobilizer at all. On the entries that record a market split — Elantra MD, AD, XD and HD, Sonata LF and NF, Tucson TL, JM and LM, Santa Fe DM, SM and CM, Kona OS and Accent HC, RB and MC — the Canada and export builds of the same car do carry a transponder, while the CN7 entry covers the US base SE flip only. That is not a rule you can apply blind, though: the 2019-2022 Veloster JS turn-key ships under one FCC with either a 4D60 chip (95430-J3000) or no chip (95430-J3010), and the 2020-2024 Venue QX base SE flip exists in both 4A-transponder and no-chip builds, so the key has to be tested rather than assumed. Philips Crypto ID46 (PCF7936 blade, PCF7952 smart) covers the 2011-2014 Sonata YF smart, 2013-2016 Elantra MD smart and 2013-2018 Santa Fe DM smart trims. ID47 Hitag3 covers a wide 2015-2023 band: Genesis Sedan DH, Tucson TL, Kona OS, Accent HC Limited, Veloster JS, Santa Fe TM, Sonata DN8 and Palisade LX2. The AES cars are interleaved with that band rather than stacked on the end of it — the 2017-2020 Elantra AD smart is 8A DST-AES, not the ID47 its siblings use, and so is the 2015-2019 Sonata LF smart. The 2021-2026 Elantra CN7 is 6A HITAG-AES (a minority of listings call it ID49), the 2020-2024 Venue QX is 4A HITAG-AES, and the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Santa Cruz and Nexo are ID4A / 8A. Ordering by model year instead of by chip is the classic Hyundai mistake — the blank simply will not program.

Hyundai Elantra
Three platforms, three answers. The 2011-2016 MD turn-key has no US immobilizer and rides on the HY18/HY20 two-track laser blade (Lishi HY20/HY18), while the 2013-2016 MD smart fob is ID46 at 433/434 MHz — do not grab a 315 MHz remote out of the turn-key parts bin, because the MD turn-key RKE is the 315 MHz OSLOKA-360T. The 2017-2020 AD turn-key has no chip at all, the generation the USB theft trick targeted, on a genuine KK12 blade; but the AD smart trim is 8A DST-AES, not the ID47 its siblings use, so it needs an AES-capable blank. The 2021-2026 CN7 is 6A HITAG-AES on KK12: read the immobilizer password, then hold the back of the fob against the START button about five seconds until the anti-theft lamp flashes. All-keys-lost runs 15-25 minutes on the MD and AD smart trims, 20-35 on the CN7.
Hyundai Sonata
Five keyways across the run and three transponder families on top of the non-immobilized trims. The 2011-2014 YF smart is ID46 at 315 MHz on the HY18/HY20 laser — the entry is explicit that you should not stock a 433 MHz fob for this generation. The 2015-2019 LF smart moved to the LXP90/KK10 blade read with a Lishi HY22, and its chip is 8A DST-AES, not ID46 or ID47; the PIN reads free over OBD, which the data calls one of the easiest Hyundai all-keys-lost jobs, at 15-25 minutes. The 2020-2023 DN8 is ID47 Hitag3 at 433/434 MHz on KK12 for most builds, though some 2020-2021 inserts are catalogued as LXP90/KK10, so we confirm the physical blade. On 2021-2022 DN8 builds the automatic PIN read is not supported, so we line up a third-party password first; that job is 20-40 minutes.
Hyundai Tucson
The keyway changes with the platform, not the year. The 2005-2009 JM and 2010-2015 LM turn-key blades are HY15/HYN14R (Lishi HY15). The 2016-2021 TL uses the LXP90/KK10 six-cut blade read with a Lishi HY22 — the US SE turn-key is non-immobilized (TQ8-RKE-4F25) while the smart trims are ID47 with two FCC/part pairs across the facelift: 4F07 with 95440-D3100 for 2016-2018, 4F11 with 95440-D3110 for 2018-2021. The 2022-2026 NX4 switched to a genuine KK12 insert (part 81996-N9000, Lishi K5/KK12); its chip is listed as ID47 with some later builds possibly HITAG-AES, so we verify on the fob. TL smart all-keys-lost is 15-25 minutes, NX4 20-35.
Hyundai Santa Fe
Two unrelated platforms. The 2013-2018 DM smart trim is ID46/PCF7952 at 315 MHz in the US on an HY18/HY20 two-track laser blade (emergency blade 81996-2W040, Lishi HY20/HY18) — do not stock a 433 MHz fob for a US DM, and note the 4Z200 fob is Santa Fe Sport only for 2015-2018. The DM turn-key trim has no US immobilizer at all. The 2019-2023 TM is a different platform: KK12 insert, Lishi K5/KK12, ID47 confirmed on 2019-2020 (FCC 4F19), while a few 2021-plus listings claim AES, so we verify the chip before burning a blank. On 2021-2022 TM cars an incapable or condition-not-met error means we take the Diagnostic path instead of the IMMO menu. TM all-keys-lost is 20-30 minutes.
Hyundai Kona
ID47 Hitag3 (PCF7938) prox at 433.92 MHz with a KK12 emergency insert, decoded with the Lishi K5/KK12. Three FCC variants ship across 2018-2023 — TQ8-FOB-4F18, 4F43 and 4F19 — so we read the FCC off your original fob before ordering rather than going by model year. The US turn-key SE is the opposite job entirely: OSLOKA-450T flip, no immobilizer, cut-only at 5-15 minutes. Smart-key all-keys-lost is 15-25 minutes, and the PIN reads over OBD.
Hyundai Palisade
ID47 Hitag3 (NCF29A1X) prox at 434 MHz on a KK12 insert, and every US LX2 is push-button start. FCC TQ8-FOB-4F29 and 4F33 vary by build, so we match the exact part rather than the model. On 2020-2022 LX2 the PIN reads over OBD, proven on Autel IM508/IM608; the notes flag that 2024-plus builds may instead need a dealer or NASTF passcode, which we confirm from the VIN before dispatch. All-keys-lost is 20-30 minutes.

Being quoted chip programming on a car with no chip
Whole US trim lines shipped without an immobilizer: 2011-2016 Elantra MD turn-key, 2017-2020 Elantra AD turn-key, 2016-2021 Tucson TL SE, 2013-2018 Santa Fe DM turn-key, 2018-2023 Kona OS SE, 2015-2017 Sonata LF SE, 2018-2023 Accent HC (95430-J0700) and the base SE flip on the 2021-2026 Elantra CN7. We check the immobilizer lamp and the key part-number suffix on arrival — the Canadian Accent 95430-J0800 does carry a chip where the US J0700 does not. A non-immobilized car needs only a cut blade — there is no chip to program.
The spare at home stops working after a lost-key job
On the platforms the data documents — Elantra CN7, Elantra AD smart, Tucson NX4 and Kona OS smart — all-keys-lost erases every key stored in the module, so any fob left in a kitchen drawer dies with the old one. The procedure itself requires every surviving fob to be relearned, so bring all of them to the appointment.
Aftermarket fob on the wrong frequency
Hyundai split 315 MHz and 433/434 MHz across overlapping years. The 2011-2014 Sonata YF smart is 315 MHz while the 2020-2023 DN8 is 433/434. The 2013-2018 Santa Fe DM is 315 MHz in the US and 433 on export builds. The 2013-2016 Elantra MD smart is 433/434 while the MD turn-key remote is the 315 MHz OSLOKA-360T. A frequency mismatch reads as a dead fob even though the chip is fine, so we match frequency and FCC before we cut.
Same FCC number, different chip inside
The 2020-2024 Venue QX and the 2019-2022 Veloster JS smart both ship under FCC SY5IGFGE04, but the Venue is 4A HITAG-AES and the Veloster is ID47 Hitag3. The Veloster turn-key has the same trap internally: 95430-J3000 carries a 4D60 80-bit chip and 95430-J3010 carries none, under one FCC. We order by OEM part number, never by FCC alone.
Scan tool returns condition not met on the immobilizer menu
Documented on the 2021-2022 Santa Fe TM and the 2022-plus Elantra CN7, and the 2021-2022 Sonata DN8 has a related 47-chip PIN-read failure. It is a tool-path problem, not a car fault. We route through the Diagnostic menu instead of the IMMO menu, update firmware where the CN7 throws a dead-communication error, or supply the password from a third-party source on the DN8, and the learn completes.

Read the immobilizer password over OBD
Of the Hyundai generations our reference data documents port access for, all 23 record an open OBD-II port with no security gateway and no G-box requirement, so the password reads directly on those generations; the remaining entries record nothing on that field, so we verify rather than assume. Several entries flag that the PIN may not come free over OBD — the 2021-2022 Sonata DN8, the Ioniq 5 on 2022-plus builds, the Ioniq 6 on 2023-plus builds, the early-2022 Santa Cruz, the Nexo and the Palisade LX2 on 2024-plus builds — and on those we arrive with the password already sourced. The Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 notes additionally warn that the CAN gateway may require a bypass.
