Jeep Key Technology Explained
Jeep inherits the Chrysler immobilizer lineage. The 1999 to 2004 WJ Grand Cherokee ran Sentry Key (SKIS) on a Texas Crypto 4D64 blade. From roughly 2005 to 2017 nearly the whole lineup, including the WK Grand Cherokee, JK Wrangler, Liberty, Patriot and first-gen Compass, used Philips Crypto 2 ID46 (PCF7941) stored in the SKREEM/WCM. The 2014 Cherokee KL opened the NXP Hitag AES 4A era with the PCF7961M, joined by the JL Wrangler and Gladiator on PCF7939M and the Compass MP and Renegade prox on PCF7953M. Newest is NXP Hitag Pro ID47 on the WL Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee L, Wagoneer WS and Grand Wagoneer WS. The base Renegade flip key sits outside the Chrysler families altogether on a Megamos Crypto AES ID88. The FCA Security Gateway lands in 2018 on the Wrangler JL, the WK2 Grand Cherokee, the Cherokee KL and the Compass MP, in 2020 on the Gladiator, and from around 2019 on the Renegade.
Jeep Models We Service Most Often in DFW
Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 (2011-2013 FOBIK)
Base Laredo trims are an insert-and-turn FOBIK in the dash ignition node, but Keyless Enter-N-Go was optional on Overland, Summit and packaged cars and gives push-button start using the prox version of the same IYZ-C01C fobik family. Both coexist across these three years, so the vehicle decides, not the model year. ID46 PCF7945 at 433.92 MHz, PIN read from the keyless/RF module, no gateway, 15-25 minutes for all-keys-lost.
Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 (2014-2021 smart key)
The 2014 facelift made the M3N-40821302 smart key standard across the trims, ID46 PCF7953, Y159 CY24 emergency blade. 2014-2017 is straight OBD; 2018-2021 needs the 12+8 bypass at the green star connector behind the passenger glovebox, plus a G-Box on secure builds. 25-40 minutes for all-keys-lost.
Jeep Grand Cherokee WL (2022+) & Grand Cherokee L (2021+)
ID47 Hitag Pro, FCC M3NWXF0B1, and a reversed-keyway CY24R emergency blade a standard CY24 decoder will not even enter, so it takes the CY24R-2021. Neither car uses the 2018-2020 12+8 adapter route; on the WL Grand Cherokee the gateway is a fixed module bracketed to the passenger-side HVAC case rather than the accessible green star splice the WK2 had, so access is taken module-side. Some VINs need online Chrysler server validation and success varies by build date. 40-90 minutes for all-keys-lost.
Jeep Wagoneer WS & Grand Wagoneer WS (2022+)
Same ID47 / M3NWXF0B1 / CY24R key system as the WL Grand Cherokee, and 2024 switched the fob FCC to 2BAHD-KFW1, which is not cross-compatible with M3NWXF0B1. Their documented all-keys-lost route is an SGW bypass at the star/12+8 connector followed by Autel IM608 II, with online server VIN validation on some build dates. There is no separate all-keys-lost time estimate for these two, so the WL's 40-90 minutes does not get carried over to them; we scope the job on the VIN instead.
Jeep Wrangler JK (2007-2018)
Turn-key only, no push-start was ever offered. ID46 PCF7941 remote-head key on a Y159 CY24 blade at 315 MHz, PIN pulled from the WIN/WCM over plain OBD, no gateway on any JK year. With two working keys the onboard add-a-key relearn still works.
Jeep Wrangler JL (2018+) & Gladiator JT (2020+)
4A Hitag-AES PCF7939M, FCC OHT1130261, SIP22 flip blade. Keyed and push-start trims share identical electronics but different part numbers, so ignition type must be confirmed before a blank is ordered. Secure PIN read calls for a G-Box on many builds; power can come off the glovebox OBD port via an ADC11 splitter. 25-45 minutes for all-keys-lost on both.
Jeep Cherokee KL (2014-2023)
Two ignitions ran side by side every single year, split by trim: the GQ4-53T turn-key fobik and the GQ4-54T push-start prox. Both are 4A PCF7961M at 433.92 MHz on a Y159 CY24 blade. 2014-2017 is straight OBD, 2018 onward is gated, and on the KL the gateway module sits behind the radio and center stack with its 12-pin and 8-pin plugs, not behind the glovebox. All-keys-lost runs 20-40 minutes on the turn-key fobik, 20-35 on the pre-facelift prox and 25-45 on the 2019-2023 facelift prox.
Jeep Compass MP & Renegade BU
The M3N-40821302 prox on these carries a 4A PCF7953M chip, not the ID46 in the identical-looking WK2 key, so the two must never be cross-stocked. For model year 2017 the carryover MK Compass was still on sale alongside the new MP, and it uses a JK-style ID46 remote-head key on a Y159 blade instead. The base Renegade flip is a Megamos Crypto AES ID88 on a SIP22 blade, not a Chrysler 4A, so a Chrysler blank does not get loaded for it, while Renegade Keyless-Go prox has been available since 2015 rather than arriving in 2019, so the split is by trim, not by year. 25-45 minutes for all-keys-lost on both.
Common Jeep Key Problems We Solve
Both Wrangler keys gone at a trailhead or job site
On a JK the PIN comes out of the WIN/WCM over plain OBD and a fresh ID46 key gets learned, estimated at 15-25 minutes for that body. On a JL or Gladiator it is a G-Box secure PIN read on many builds, a full erase of every key, then learning the new 4A smart key, estimated at 25-45 minutes for those two.
Scan tool connects to a gateway-era Jeep but cannot write
That is the FCA Security Gateway doing its job. Where a plug-in bypass applies the window is model-specific: 2018-2020 on the JL Wrangler, 2018-2021 on the WK2 Grand Cherokee, 2018-2020 on the Cherokee KL and Compass MP, 2020 on the Gladiator, roughly 2019-2020 on the Renegade prox. So is the tap point: a green star connector behind the passenger glovebox on the JL and the WK2, a 12+8 unplug at the gateway module's own harness plugs on the Gladiator, the Cherokee KL and the Renegade, and an in-line RF Hub tap above the rear headliner on a prox Compass MP. Later builds, and the WL Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L from the start, are gated where that adapter no longer fits, so access has to be taken at the module itself instead.
JK Wrangler with intermittent key faults or a no-crank
Failing WIN/WCM modules are a well-known JK weakness and impersonate a dead key convincingly. We verify module communication over OBD before a blank gets cut, which stops owners paying for a key that was never the problem.
Fob ordered online that will not program
Jeep sells a lot of look-alikes. Wrong FCC on a Cherokee KL, an ID46 shell bought for a 4A Compass, a Chrysler blank tried on a Megamos AES Renegade flip, or an M3NWXF0B1 Wagoneer key on a 2024 truck that wants 2BAHD-KFW1. We identify the chip family from the VIN before anything is ordered.

Confirm VIN, body code and ignition type
Jeep splits by body, not by model year. We establish WK2 versus WL, JK versus JL, and turn-key versus push-to-start before dispatch, because that decides the chip family, the blank and the tooling the job needs.

Decode the lock and cut the blade
The Chrysler 8-cut CY24 keyway covers the Y159, Y160 and Y170 blanks and is decoded with a Lishi CY24. The JL, Gladiator, Compass MP and Renegade use SIP22. The WL Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee L and Wagoneer use the reversed CY24R, which a standard CY24 decoder will not enter, so it needs the CY24R-2021. Decoding the driver door is what avoids a by-VIN code pull: the JK's locks carry no stamped code at all, and on the Wagoneer a door read on its own is enough.

Gain gateway access and read the PIN
Which access applies is set by the model and the build year: a green star-connector tap behind the passenger glovebox on the 2018-2020 JL and the 2018-2021 WK2 Grand Cherokee, a 12+8 unplug at the gateway module's own harness plugs on the 2018-2020 Cherokee KL and the 2020 Gladiator, an in-line RF Hub tap at the rear headliner on the 2018-2020 prox Compass MP, and module-side access on the later builds and on the WL where no plug-in adapter fits. A G-Box is called for on the secure PIN reads. If a PIN read stalls on a JL or Gladiator, the documented fix is to delete all keys, cycle the battery and retry rather than force it.

Erase, learn and verify
An all-keys-lost erase wipes every key the vehicle knows, which is why a spare that turns up afterwards has to be programmed back in rather than simply working again. Before we leave we test start, remote lock and unlock, remote start where fitted, and the emergency blade in the driver door.
