Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make a Land Rover key if I lost all my keys?

Yes. We create new Land Rover keys from scratch even with zero working keys. We access the immobilizer system directly, erase old key data, and program your new key as the primary. All-keys-lost service is the most complex scenario but we handle it on-site without towing.

How long does Land Rover key replacement take?

Standard key with transponder: 20-30 minutes. Smart Key programming: 30-45 minutes. All-keys-lost scenario: 45-90 minutes depending on the Land Rover model and security system generation.

Is a locksmith cheaper than the Land Rover dealer?

Yes — typically 30-50% less. Land Rover dealerships charge premium labor rates plus parts markup. MyKey uses OEM-equivalent key fobs at wholesale pricing, and our mobile service eliminates towing costs. Same quality programming, significantly lower price.

Do you warranty Land Rover key replacements?

Yes. All Land Rover key replacements come with a 1-year warranty covering the key fob hardware and programming. If the key fails due to a defect within 12 months, we replace it at no charge.

About Our Land Rover Locksmith Service in Dallas-Fort Worth

Land Rover density in DFW clusters hard — Range Rovers in the Park Cities and Southlake, Defenders and Discovery Sports through Frisco and Westlake, Evoques all over North Dallas. What separates these trucks from a Toyota or a Ford is that a Land Rover is not a plug-in-and-program vehicle. Every KVM and RFA model keeps its key table locked inside a dedicated immobilizer module, and nothing gets written until that module data is collected — that covers every proximity Land Rover from 2010 on, with the 2008–2012 LR2 as the odd one out on its own slot-in smart key. Our technicians work from a per-generation reference covering US Land Rovers from the 2000 P38A through the current L460 and L461, so we arrive knowing which module is in your truck before we open the door.

    Land Rover Key Technology Explained

Land Rover ran five different immobilizer architectures in twenty years, and which one is in your truck decides the whole job. The 2000–2002 P38A Range Rover used a Lucas 10AS/5AS immobilizer tied to the BeCM, and most US P38s carry no transponder chip at all — security is the rolling-code remote plus the EKA emergency access code. The 2000–2004 Discovery Series II is also a BeCM truck on a rolling-code fob (FCC N5FVALTX3), but whether the key itself holds a transponder varies by market and year, so that one gets verified on the vehicle. The 2003–2005 L322 borrowed BMW EWS3 outright: a PCF7935 (ID44) chip on a two-track HU92 blade. From 2005 the LR3, and from 2006 the L322 and the L320 Sport, moved to NXP Hitag2 ID46 (PCF7941) flip keys on HU101. Around 2010 proximity arrived — NXP Hitag-Pro ID49 (PCF7953P) governed by the KVM — while the 2008–2012 LR2 sat outside that pattern on a PCF7945 ID46 slot-in key. From 2018 the RFA module took over from the KVM on the lines that carried through that change — L405, L494, Discovery 5 and Discovery Sport, with the Velar L560 on RFA from launch — and those RFA keys are listed as NCF29A. The Evoque L538 stayed a KVM PCF7953P car through 2019, and the newest L460 and L461 are logged only as Hitag-Pro ID49 with no chip part named.

Land Rover Models We Service Most Often in DFW

    Land Rover Range Rover (L405 / L460)

2013–2017 L405 is a KVM car on the KOBJTF10A fob; 2018–2022 L405 moved to the RFA module and KOBJXF18A (LR116873); the 2022-plus L460 runs the latest RFA with a KOBJXF23A key. On the L460, aftermarket JLR coverage is still maturing — dealer JLR Topix/Pathfinder remains the primary path on some cars, and we tell you that on the phone rather than in your driveway.

    Land Rover Range Rover Sport (L320 / L494 / L461)

The 2010–2013 L320 facelift and the 2014–2017 L494 are Hitag-Pro ID49 through the KVM. 2018–2022 L494 switches to RFA and NCF29A, where all-keys-lost may need bench or CAN access. The 2023-plus L461 shares the L460's latest RFA on a KOBJXF23A key, with coverage still maturing. Emergency blade stays HU101 across all of them.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque & Velar

Evoque L538 (2012–2019) is KVM on the KOBJTF10A; the L551 from 2020 is RFA on the KOBJXF18A / LR116873. Velar L560 has been RFA since its 2018 launch. None of them accept a plain OBD add-a-key — module data comes first even with a working key in hand.

    Land Rover Defender (L663)

The 2020-plus Defender is an RFA vehicle with an NCF29A Hitag-Pro fob under FCC KOBJXF18A (LR116873). All-keys-lost here may need bench or CAN-adapter access to the RFA instead of an OBD session, and the newest model years may move to a KOBJXF23A-class key, so the part gets confirmed from the VIN.

Land Rover Discovery, LR3, LR4 & Discovery Sport

LR3 (2005–2009) is a Hitag2 ID46 PCF7941 flip key we decode with Lishi HU101. LR4 (2010–2016) is KVM proximity on the KOBJTF10A. Discovery 5 (L462) straddles the change: 2017 is KVM, 2018 onward is RFA, and 2017 cars get verified on the vehicle because some early ones are still KVM/KOBJTF10A. Discovery Sport L550 splits the same way — KVM 2015–2017, RFA 2018-plus.

    Land Rover LR2 (Freelander 2)

The 2008–2012 LR2 uses an unusual slot-in dash smart key — PCF7945 / ID46 under FCC NT8-TX9, part numbers LR013005 and LR013006. The 2013–2015 facelift jumps to KVM Hitag-Pro proximity on the KOBJTF10A. Same nameplate, two entirely different chips.

Common Land Rover Key Problems We Solve

Only key lost on a 2018–2022 Range Rover

The RFA module holds the key table on these. We collect RFA data on-site with Yanhua ACDP JLR, Lonsdor JLR or VVDI, and where the module will not answer over OBD we take bench or CAN-adapter access to it rather than sending you to a dealer.

2003–2005 Range Rover with no key at all

This is a BMW EWS3 job, not a Land Rover one. The immobilizer module in front of the handbrake comes out, gets an EEPROM read on the bench, a new PCF7935 is written and the lost keys are deleted before it goes back in.

    Online fob refuses to enroll

Owners routinely buy a KOBJTF10A for an RFA truck or a KOBJXF18A for a KVM truck because the fobs look identical. Cross-generation parts will not program. We confirm the correct FCC and part number from the VIN before anything gets cut.

P38A Range Rover locked out with a dead remote

Most US P38s have no transponder to program — entry runs through the EKA code at the door lock and the fob has to be resynced to the BeCM. Different problem, different fix, and no new chip required.

How Our Land Rover Key Replacement Process Works

    1. 1

Decode the VIN, identify the immobilizer

Before dispatch we establish whether your truck is BeCM, BMW EWS3, an ID46 IDS-era car, KVM or RFA. That single answer decides the tooling, the fob part number and the quote.

    2. 2

      Mobile dispatch across DFW

Our van comes to your driveway, garage or roadside spot anywhere in Dallas-Fort Worth, typically arriving in 20-30 minutes, stocked with HU101 and HU92 blanks and JLR-capable programmers.

    3. 3

      Decode or cut the blade

On HU101 cars we read the door lock with a Lishi HU101 — Lishi HU92 on the 2003–2005 L322 — or cut to code from the VIN. On push-button models this blade only serves the door and glovebox.

    4. 4

      Collect the module data

KVM cars are read with an Autel IM608 plus the APB112 smart-key simulator. RFA cars go through Yanhua ACDP JLR, Lonsdor JLR, VVDI or an Autel with JLR RFA support. EWS3 cars get a bench EEPROM read with AK90+ or VVDI-Prog. There is no shortcut past this step on any KVM or RFA Land Rover.

    5. 5

Write the key, purge the lost ones, verify

The new key is written into the module and previously lost keys are deleted where the platform supports it — on the EWS3 cars that deletion is part of the bench job. Then we test proximity entry, push-button start and every button on the fob before packing up.

Why DFW Land Rover Owners Choose MyKey Locksmith

KVM and RFA module data collected at your location, not at a dealership bay
Lishi HU101 and HU92 decoding on the cars that use those profiles — a working blade with no original key; the pre-HU101 models are cut by code or decoded at the door lock
Per-generation coverage from the 2000 P38A BeCM through the 2018-plus RFA trucks — on the 2022-plus L460 and 2023-plus L461, aftermarket JLR coverage is still maturing and some cars still route to the dealer
Correct fob confirmed from your VIN before we cut — KOBJTF10A, KOBJXF18A / LR116873 or KOBJXF23A on the proximity trucks, and the earlier flip-key and remote-fob parts on the older ones
24/7 mobile service across Dallas-Fort Worth, typically on scene in 20-30 minutes
