A Subaru key job is rarely about difficulty. It is about identification. The same model year can leave the factory as a turn-key car on a B110 / DAT17 10-cut blade or as a push-button-start car on a TOY51 emergency insert, and the transponder inside can be the 80-bit Subaru G (Texas Crypto DST80) or the 128-bit Subaru H (Texas Crypto DST-AES, 8A) depending on the platform underneath. Those are different blanks, different door keyways and different programming routines, and Subaru does not always signal which is which from the outside. We settle what the VIN can settle before a van leaves, and on the trims our notes flag as badge-unreliable we confirm by the actual ignition and key at the car, so the right blade and the right chip show up the first time.
Subaru Key Technology Explained
Subaru immobilizers move through four eras, and the era decides the key. Early-2000s Legacy and Baja base trims left the US market with no transponder at all. From 2005 Subaru ran the Texas 4D-62 40-bit chip in the Outback BP, the Tribeca, the 2005-2006 Baja and the 2008-2011 Impreza, whose late 2010-2011 builds already cross over to the 80-bit G. Around 2012 the fleet moved to Subaru G / Texas Crypto DST80, the 80-bit chip vendors also list as 4D-60, 4D-80 or 4D-82. That era is usually 315 MHz on the CWTWB1U811 remote head, but not always: the 2014-2018 Forester SJ shipped either 315 MHz (CWTWB1U811) or 433 MHz (CWTWBU766), so we verify by the FCC ID printed on the original remote rather than by year. With the Subaru Global Platform, starting at the 2017 Impreza, 2018 Crosstrek, 2019 Forester and 2020 Outback, the chip became Subaru H / Texas Crypto DST-AES, the 128-bit 8A, at 433.92 MHz. H / 8A is not confined to that platform in our data: the 2018 and later Keyless Access smart keys on the 2015-2019 Legacy BN and the 2015-2021 WRX VA carry it too, on cars built before the platform change. That is the same TI AES family Toyota uses for its 8A keys, which is exactly why Subaru smart all-keys-lost runs off a Toyota 8A cable set. Two entries leave the Subaru keyway entirely: the 2023 and later Solterra, the Toyota bZ4X twin, carries a Toyota 8A smart key (HYQ14FBX) at 315 MHz on a Toyota laser emergency insert read with a Lishi TOY48, and the 2013-2020 BRZ ZC6, the Toyota 86 and Scion FR-S twin, takes the TR47 four-track blade.
Subaru Models We Service Most Often in DFW
Subaru Outback
The 2015-2019 BS splits by trim. Base 2.5i and most Premium are turn-key with a CWTWB1U811 G chip (DST80) remote head on the B110 / DAT17 blade, while Limited, Touring, 3.6R and optioned Premium are push-start HYQ14AHC smart on a TOY51 insert. The 2020-2025 BT dropped the turn-key variant entirely and moved to H / 8A at 433.92 MHz on the HYQ14AHK and HYQ14AKB fobs.
Subaru Forester
The 2019-2024 SK is a Global Platform car, so both the base turn-key CWTB1G077 remote head and the smart fob (HYQ14AHK on 2019-2022, HYQ14AKB on 2023-2024) carry the H / 8A chip. The 2014-2018 SJ before it is G / DST80, and its smart-box reset holds the immobilizer about 15 minutes, so we pull the horn relay to silence the honking. The 2025 Forester is the new SL generation and we verify that one separately.
Subaru Crosstrek
Second-generation GT from 2018 is Global Platform, H / 8A at 433.92 MHz. Base and Premium without the keyless option are turn-key CWTB1G077 on the B110 / DAT17 blade, Limited and optioned Premium are smart HYQ14AHK on a TOY51 insert, which is two different door keyways inside one model year. Onboard DIY remote pairing is reported to have stopped working on newer builds, so we plan for tool programming. On the 2024 and later GU, smart is standard from Premium up and base-trim remote-head availability is unconfirmed.
Subaru Impreza
The 2017-2023 GK / GT wears the same CWTB1G077 shell as older G-chip Subarus but has the H / 8A chip inside, so we verify by platform and build year, never by the FCC number on the case. Smart all-keys-lost runs G-Box plus APB112 emulator with no PIN. Go back one generation and the split matters: the 2012-2016 GJ / GP is G / DST80, and a minority of those builds need a PIN pulled via dealer SSM3 or a D1 subscription.
Subaru Ascent
Three-row family SUV, push-start smart standard on every trim from the 2019 launch through 2025, H / 8A at 433.92 MHz. HYQ14AHK covers 2019-2022 and HYQ14AKB covers 2023 onward. The AKB fobs are harder to source and often get pushed to the dealer in the wild, but the Autel handles them over OBD like the rest.
Subaru WRX and BRZ
The 2015-2021 VA WRX and STI straddle the change: turn-key trims are G / DST80 on a B110 edge blade, while Limited Keyless Access smart fobs move to H / 8A on 2018 and later. The 2022 VB WRX and the 2022 ZD8 BRZ are H / 8A and need a CAN-FD cable on the programmer with a security-access wait. The 2013-2020 ZC6 BRZ is the Toyota 86 and Scion FR-S twin, so it takes a TR47 four-track blade, not the Subaru B110, and gets ordered differently.
Subaru Legacy
The 2015-2019 BN runs G / DST80 on turn-key trims with H / 8A appearing on the 2018 and later smart keys, all on a plain B110 edge cut that a Lishi B110 decodes, including the smart-key emergency insert. The 2020-2025 BW / BT is H / 8A throughout and needs a CAN-FD cable with a security-access wait window. Go back to the 2010-2014 BM / BR and the blade becomes a DAT17 high-security laser, which needs a laser machine rather than an edge cutter.
Common Subaru Key Problems We Solve
All four key slots are already taken
On every Subaru generation our data gives a slot count for, the immobilizer or smart box learns a maximum of four keys. Once full, a fifth cannot be appended, and the only path is a full erase and relearn that kills every key currently paired. We read the learned-key count first so nobody finds out the expensive way.
Correct FCC ID, fob still will not learn
CWTB1G077 was sold in both G-chip DST80 and H-chip 8A versions with identical shells and unreliable pod colors. Wrong chip family and the immobilizer will never accept it. We match by platform generation, then program.
Spare ordered against the wrong keyway
A single Subaru model year can run a B110 / DAT17 10-cut blade on turn-key trims and a TOY51 emergency insert on Keyless Access trims. Order by model alone and the key that arrives will not even enter the door lock.
Push-button start ignores the fob in your pocket
On the push-start Subarus whose emergency-blade behavior our data records, the blade unlocks the door only and will not start the car. Where the dead-fob procedure is written down, the 2015-2019 and 2020-2025 Outback, the Forester SK, the Impreza, the Crosstrek and the Ascent, you hold the fob logo-side flat against the Start button and press; every one of those notes has the brake down except the 2015-2019 Outback, where the note stops at holding the fob to the button. From there we work out whether it is the cell or the fob itself, and confirm the RF side still reaches full range before we pack up.

Push-start cars only have a driver-door cylinder, so we decode there and cut the TOY51 insert. Edge-cut Legacy, Baja and Tribeca are read with a Lishi B110, and the Solterra with a Lishi TOY48.
