Aluminum Frame Glass Doors
The most common storefront door type across Dallas-Fort Worth strip malls, shopping centers, and office buildings. Narrow-stile aluminum frames hold tempered glass panels with locks specifically designed for the narrow profile. These doors require specialized hardware — standard residential or even standard commercial locks don't fit. Adams Rite and Schlage narrow-stile are the industry standard brands for aluminum storefront doors.
Solid Core Commercial Doors
Found in older buildings, standalone businesses, and rear entrances. Solid core wood or composite doors accept standard commercial cylindrical or mortise locks. These doors are heavier and more secure than aluminum glass doors but still need proper Grade 1 or Grade 2 commercial hardware — not residential-grade locks.
Hollow Metal Doors
Steel doors used in warehouse-adjacent retail, industrial storefronts, and back-of-house applications. Hollow metal doors accept mortise locks, cylindrical locks, and can be equipped with panic hardware. They're the most durable storefront door option but require professional installation due to their weight and the precision needed for lock cutouts.
Storefront Lock Types by Door
Adams Rite Deadlatch
The standard lock for narrow-stile aluminum glass doors. Adams Rite deadlatches (4510, 4710, MS1890 series) are designed to fit inside the narrow aluminum frame — only 1-1/8" wide. They provide deadlatch protection (the bolt can't be shimmed open with a credit card) without a protruding deadbolt that could interfere with the glass. We install, repair, and rekey all Adams Rite models.
Mortise Locks for Aluminum Frames
Heavy-duty option for high-security storefronts. Mortise locks install inside the door and provide both a latch and a deadbolt in one unit. Schlage L-series and BEST are common choices for DFW storefronts that need extra security. Cost: $300-600 installed.
Multipoint Locking Systems
The highest security option for storefront glass doors. Multipoint locks engage at the top, middle, and bottom of the door simultaneously, making prying virtually impossible. Ideal for jewelry stores, electronics retailers, and any high-value storefront. Cost: $500-1,000 installed.
Smash-and-Grab Prevention
Dallas-Fort Worth has seen an increase in smash-and-grab burglaries targeting retail storefronts. While locks alone can't prevent someone from breaking glass, the right combination of security measures creates significant delay — and delay is deterrence. We recommend: 3M security window film (holds broken glass together, adding 30-60 seconds of delay), floor bolts (prevent the door from being pried out of the frame), security pins on hinge side (prevent hinge-side entry), and reinforced strike plates with 3" screws (prevent frame separation). For high-value retail, consider security bars or grilles deployed after hours.
Common Storefront Door Problems
Adams Rite Deadlatch Fails to Engage
The most common storefront lock problem. The latch doesn't fully extend or doesn't catch the strike. Causes: worn latch bolt, misaligned strike (door sag or frame shift from DFW heat), or internal spring failure. Fix: adjust strike, replace latch bolt, or replace the entire lock body. Cost: $75-200 for repair, $175-350 for replacement.
Aluminum Frame Door Sags
Aluminum storefront door frames expand and contract with temperature changes. In DFW's extreme heat (ground-level temps near aluminum doors can exceed 130°F), frames shift enough to misalign locks. Fix: adjust pivot hinges, shim the frame, and realign the strike plate. If the door closer is also involved, adjust closer speed and latching force.
Storefront Lock FAQ
Q: Can you fix my storefront lock the same day?
A: Yes. We carry common storefront hardware (Adams Rite, Schlage narrow-stile) in our vans for same-day repair and replacement.
Q: My glass door lock is very hard to turn — can you fix it?
A: Usually yes. Hard-to-turn locks are caused by misalignment, worn cylinders, or lack of lubrication. Our technician will diagnose and fix the issue on-site.
Q: Can you add a deadbolt to a glass storefront door?
A: Glass doors can't accept standard deadbolts, but Adams Rite deadlatches and multipoint locks provide equivalent security designed for glass door frames.
Q: Do you service automatic sliding glass doors?
A: We service the lock and security hardware. For the automatic operator/motor, we can recommend specialized door service companies in DFW.
